It is highly encouraged that prospective students contact Dr. Baker to discuss repertoire choices and schedule a free private lesson (virtual or on campus) to help prepare for the audition.
Undergraduate students planning on majoring in music (BA) or music education (BME) must be accepted into the music department by audition in addition to being accepted to the university. These auditions take place during the spring semester and can be scheduled by contacting Dr. Baker ([email protected]) or the MSU Band Office at 662-325-2713. Auditions consist of a solo or etude of your choice on each of the following instruments:
Summer Graduate Students enrolled in the Master of Music Education degree program may enroll in applied percussion lessons as an elective credit. Please contact Dr. Baker for questions or details.

- Concert Snare Drum (ex. Cirone - Portraits in Rhythm, Peters - Intermediate Snare Drum Studies)
- Keyboard Percussion - 2 or 4 mallets (ex. McMillan - Masterpieces for Marimba or see "Beginning to Intermediate Marimba Solos" on the Method Books and Repertoire page of this website)
- Timpani - 2, 3, or 4 drums - no tuning changes required (ex. Firth - The Solo Timpanist or see "Beginning to Intermediate Timpani Solos" on the Method Books and Repertoire page of this website)
- Sightreading on snare drum and keyboard percussion (2 mallets)
